MSWord 2004 CPU Usage 100%

At times when I use MS Word 2004 on my MacBook the CPU usage shoots up
to 100% (even without other programs open) and then the hard drive
gets really loud. I'm not sure what causes it, or how to stop it
(other than quitting Word, then it restarts as soon as I reopen
Word). Is this a common problem, and is there a way to fix it?

That "could" be a corrupt document or template.

Begin by replacing your Normal template, as described here:

If that doesn't fix it: Which documents, and what is in them?

Cheers
