MSWord 2007 cursor doesn't move around using mouse & Crashes on Ex

I have office professional 2007 and its completely updated. I'm running Vista
Ultimate and it's updated. MS word worked yesterday, but today it's screwed
up somehow. I can't get the cursor to move around in the document when using
the mouse to move it. The cursor moves around other programs just fine, so I
don't' suspect the mouse. When I go to close the program, I get the
following error message:

My wife is having the exact same problem. Started Wednesday morning (after
the Windows & office updates were auto-installed)

She has the Vista Sp1 Home Premium and Office Pro Plus 2007 sp1. All the
latest updates were already on there.

Things I tried:
- uninstalling the office updates (no change)
- office 2007 diagnostics (reported nothing)
- Repair office 2007 pro plus
- uninstalling word and then reinstalling using Add/Remove Programs

Still had the same problems.
- Word won't let you click into any text using the mouse
- ALWAYS crashes on exit - even if you don't do anything (probably sent 25+
reports to MS error reporting already)
- If you go to "Word Options" it doesn't let you go to any other section
(Display/Proofing/Save/.../Resources) All you can do is close the dialog. So
there is no way to even go to Add-Ins to try to disable anything.

What eventually fixed the problem:
- Restored the system to the checkpoint at 3am 4/15 before the 2nd set of
Updates ran.

I haven't tried reinstalling the updates.
