MSWord_Header\Footer edit mode

Julie.Johnson

When I'm in header/footer edit mode, I can no longer
insert autotext. The drop down on the header\footer
toolbar pops up an empty box. If I do, Insert\Autotext
from the Standard Toolbar, the menu is populated with
various selections.
Any ideas?

Thank you.

Hi, Julie,

If you don't get an answer here, you might try posting to one of the Word
newsgroups, such as microsoft.public.word.pagelayout. That's where the Word
gurus tend to hang out--

Hi Julie,

Autotext in Word is style related. If you use
Insert=>AutoText when you're in the main part
of your document you'll see a default category for
those that are setup to work in the Header/Footer.

When you're in the Header or Footer those are the entries
that will appear as avaialable in Insert=>Autotext
but you should be able to use Insert=>AutoText=>Autotext
to get the full list while in your header.

Hi Julie,

The AutoText entries you see (or should see) on the Header/Footer
toolbar are associated with the Header/Footer Style. When an AutoText
entry is associated with a Style then the AutoText entry is
categorized on the Insert/AutoText/AutoText menu by the Style name.

For example the AutoText entries found under
Insert/AutoText/AutoText/Closing are associated with the Closing
Style.

More than likely you are not using the Header/Footer style in your
Header/Footer. In your Header/Footer, press Ctrl + A to select all,
and change the Style (use the Style drop down on the Formatting
toolbar) to either the Header or Footer style and the AutoText entries
should return.

Note any formatting you have applied will be removed and replaced by
the formats found in the Header/Footer style.
