MSWORKS Missing from Office 2003 Re-Install

On my HP desktop, I did a tech directed non-destructive recovery after a
crash last week. All data and files were retained. Some software had to be
re-installed and I had no problems whatsoever until it came to Office Small
Business Edition 2003 that was bundled with the machine. The programs were
still there, but they were non-executable. At the direction of a HP tech
person I uninstalled and and then reinstalled from the MS disk. All programs
(Excel, Publisher, Word, etc.) installed and worked perfectly. However, the
MSWORKS portion of the program does not install. Icons are installed, along
with the directory, but there is no executable file named msworks.exe as
there should be. I was then told to call MS. I went through the same steps of
uninstalling, including using the MS uninstall utility, and then reinstalled
with the same result. The MSWORKS program is described as "a process
belonging to Microsoft Works and provides an easy access icon to this suites
Spreadsheet and word processing functions. This program is a non-essential
system process, and is installed for ease of use." However, it is essential
for my business to locate, index & create files. How do I reinstall MSWORKS?
Thank you.

MSWorks is a completely different and seperate program to MS Office - there
is no linkage between the two

MSworks depending on version, I believe, contains Word and a 'basic'
database & spreadsheet program, however MS Office contains Excel which is a
fully featured spreadsheet program together with Word and a number of other
components.

Well that's simple enough if I had the 2003 Office compatible version of
WORKS. That, unfortunately, was not included in my software. Can I download
this here or do I have to buy a retail version somewhere? And what version?

Thanks BTY. I've spent hours with tech support people and not one suggested
this. It seems like a no brainer if it works!

What do you need Works for? MS Office contains full applications of all the
cut down apps contained in Works

The only similarity between the two is Word, and that is part of Office
There is no other compatibility between the two, they are completely
seperate and unconnected Programs
The Works interface may appear easier to navigate as it allows you to access
the components, whereas Office has seperate shortcuts for its applications,
allthough you can install the 'new office document' shortcut to your Start
(and 'open office document')

There is no such thing as a "2003 Office compatible version of WORKS".
Office is one collection of programs. Works is a completely separate
program.

If your computer came with Works, as my computer did, it's on a hidden
partition. But *believe me*, if you have Office, you do not need it.

Works acts as umbrella where I can access all programs in one place. The full
version of Office doesn't (seem) to have that ability. If it does, then I
have no need for "Works." Does Office 2003 have such a feature? Especially
keeping track of the history of all my documents.

Thanks so much. You did more in minutes that techs did in hours and hours!

If the 'New Office Document' and 'Open Office Document' shortcuts are not
shown in your start menu see here
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/help/HA010591561033.aspx

In this case document means any office file, eg Word, Excel, Publisher etc
By default office documents (files) are saved in the My Documents folder,
when you save an office file you can give it a descriptive name and if
neccessary create a new folder in My Documents to store it eg you are
dealing with the 'widget company' therefore create a folder named 'Widget'
and store it there - subfolders can be created (the save process opens a
window to My Documents in which you name the file & choose where to store
it, or create new folders - place your mouse pointer over the various icons
for an explanation)

Finally, & importantly remember to backup your data!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There are a number of free or not expensive backup applications
