Here's the skinny from Bob Mathews of Design Science (which makes MathType
and supplies Equation Editor to Microsoft):
The most important font for Equation Editor is a font called MT
Extra. Go to your fonts folder (in c:\windows\fonts, or
accessible through the Control Panel) and delete MT Extra. Close
the window and open it again. See if MT Extra is still there. If
it is, delete it again. Keep doing this until MT Extra doesn't
show up any more. (Sometimes different software apps install
their own version of MT Extra. If there is more than one copy on
your computer, only one will show up visible in the fonts folder.
That's why you have to repeat the process.)
I said MT Extra is the most important font, so why did I have you
delete it? Because that's the only way to make sure you have the
right one. Now you need to reinstall it. The easiest way to do
that is to go to our web site (at the link in my signature) and
download the MathType fonts. These are free, and the latest
version of MT Extra will be part of the download. (When you get
to our web site, look under "Free Downloads" and click on "Font
installers".)
Bob also advises downloading the free trial version of Mathtype:
My suggestion is to download the 30-day evaluation version of MathType at
the link in my signature [
http://www.dessci.com/free.asp?free=news].
MathType is the professional version of Equation Editor, and will have many
more features for the 30-day trial period. If you choose not to purchase it,
it will remain usable forever, albeit in a reduced-features mode. All
equations you created during the trial period will remain editable after the
trial period is over.
