Multi line numbering formatting (usage multiline headings)

Hello,

I am trying to have my chapter headings created using the outline numbering
tool in style to be on multiple lines. I would like a carriage return to be
automatically inserted after the number. At the moment I have in the Number
format box in the customise outline numbering dialog "Chapter <the number>"
after that follows what ever I title the heading. So it ends up looking like
"Chapter 1 Introduction" whereas I want it to be
"Chapter 1
Introduction" . (Where "Chapter 1" is automatically inserted by word after
using alt+1.)

I have tried using alt+010, alt+013, ctrl+enter and ^p. The insert after
number dialog box only has none, space and tab as the options.

You can use two styles: one for the "Chapter 1" part and one for the
title of the chapter.

Furthermore, if you want to exclude the "Chapter" part from the table
of contents, all you have to do is to is instruct Word to use the
"other" style for the TOC and then add numbering to the TOC 1 style.

It works, thanks for that. I also had to base the TOC 1 style on say the TOC
2 style to ensure that page numbers are right justifies and the there are
seperator dots.

Perhaps in future version of Word an option could be added to the 'insert
after number' for carriage returns or allow them in the 'number format'
dialog box of the customise numbering window. Of course this would not allow
for multiple formatting styles within the heading so it might need to be
thought through more thoroughly

This is probably not possible. The reason is that inserting a carriage
return (pressing ENTER) inserts a paragraph in Word. Since each
numbered item is a separate paragraph, it would be very odd if it, in
turn, inserted a new paragraph. It seems like an infinite loop,
doesn't it?

Note, however, that you can specify a "Style for following paragraph"
for the numbered style if you always want an unnumbered style to
follow it.
