Multi-protocol ODBC - Vista Problem?

I have databases that require connection through Multi-protocol. When I try
to set-up the ODBC on a Vista Home Premium machine the multi-protocol is
dimmed and not available. How do I make this available?

Multi-protocol simply means "Try TCP/IP and if that doesn't work try Named
Pipes". One of the other options should work in most cases. Your server should
be listening for one or both of those protocols.

That does not work.

How do I make available multi-protocol in ODBC on Vista?

I think you would have to use the SQL Server Client Network Utility. Likely
only available from a SQL Server Client tools CD,

Is this unique to Vista? On XP, I can connect via Multi-protocol without any
additional tools, including on XP Home, which I just confirmed.

No one should buy any of the Vista Home varieties, just as no one
should have bought WinXP Home. It is a crippled version of Windows
that will cause endless headaches if you want to use it for normal
purposes.
