Multiple copies of messages after installing Win XP SP3

Immediately after installing Windows XP SP3, every time Outlook 2003 executes
a send/receive it downloads a new copy of each message received since the SP3
install regardless whether the message has already been read, deleted, etc.
It's as if Outlook leaves a copy on our ATT/Yahoo server even though we have
already downloaded it. We're up to about 175 new messages with each
send/receive after only 4 days and most of them we've already seen.
I originally posted a thread on the Windows Update forum NG and tried
several suggestions received:
Uninstall/Re-install Outlook 2003
Uninstall/Re-install MS Office 2003 Small Bus. Ed.
Toggle "Leave copy of message on server" check box in Outlook account
settings(Outlook was closed & computer re-booted after each check and uncheck
of box).
One suggestion received was to back up messages before uninstalling Outlook.
We already had a large PST file and a rather full inbox so I created several
different PST files including one where I stored the existing inbox messages,
unopened messages included. Interestingly, none of the new messages stored
to that PST download anymore. It leads me to believe our Inbox and the
ATT/Yahoo server are not communicating on what has been downloaded or not.
I've searched all the MS & ATT/Yahoo discussion groups and FAQ's which may
apply and can't find anything relevant. Google searches don't seem to show
any similar experiences either.
Has anyone experienced similar problems or have a suggested fix? My goal is
to have Outlook download e-mails one time only from our ISP server to our
home computer - as it should do and did before installing SP3.

DL, creating a new profile (Control Panel>Mail) worked. The old one must
have been corrupted during the SP3 install. Had to go to the ATT/Yahoo Mail
Support to get all the POP3, SMTP and checkbox settings but it was easy to
find.

For others accessing this thread, I had already backed up my PST folders
using this link suggested by others:

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook/HA010875321033.aspx
Using the Microsoft Outlook Personal Folders Backup tool

Using File>Open>Outlook Data File allowed me to open the old PST (appears as
a second Personal Folders in the folder tree) and copy all my sub-folder
structure, inbox messages, etc to the new profile.
It was more difficult finding the contacts in the old PST because they do
not show up in the folder tree on the left of Outlook. But by clicking the
large blue Folder List button below the folder tree, Calendar, Contacts,
Journal, Notes, and Tasks all show up in the folder tree. Click on the "old"
Contacts in the "old" personal folders, select all, and drag & drop to the
"new" contacts in the "new" personal folders.
DL, I'm sure you know how this works but I wanted to post it for any other
newbies like myself. Maybe they'll do the same some day and save me some
aggravation!

Create a new Profile - not copy old
