multiple databases

A potential client has requested that their database

1) Is updated from dbase 3 to Access 2000
2) There is multiple instances databases which can all be
updated individually and then connected to merge the
data.
3)For use on the Intranet only with a future possibility
of going live on the web.

The client runs a kids club in various locations and
wants the multiple database idea in order to try and keep
certain accounting details seperate from customer details
They also want to store photographs of the youngsters in
a secure manner.

a) Is it possible to have multiple databases linked
either with or without it being web based and if so can
you direct me to relevent information. Is there perhaps
an easier way to accomplish the task using a single
database whilst maintaining security.
b) Is it possibleto upgrade from dbase 3 to the access in
order to preventhaving to enter all current records by
hand or is it better to re-evaluate and normalise the
existing database and come up with a whole new database
(or several) as there will be new info held.
c)To provide access via an intranet is there any
limitations in software I should be aware of. For example
with web based we'd need to look at IIS being installed
and ASP to link the web site to the database

Any info would be gratefully recieved as a beginner to
databases.

Susan,

What you want to do is possible. I am in the same boat,
bringing in dBaseIV dbf's. I am pretty much starting from
scratch as far as any coding with VBA but have good
refrences to work from.

You can link tables together from different mdb's with no
problem.

I have not tried any web based access yet, maybe someone
else can give you a tip there.

A good reference book is 'ACCESS 2002 DESKTOP' a 2 volume
set by authors Litwin, Getz and Gunderloy.
