Multiple Files Auto-Recover when Launching Word

Hello:

I am troubleshooting this issue with someone who is traveling, so I do
not have the computer in front of me but.....

When he launch's word (2004), about 20+ documents open to 'recover'.
Even if he closes them, and say discard changes, they come back each
time. It also seems that most of the files that open are duplicates of
themselves.

I've looked in the Microsoft User Data folder and see no files, and
also in the Office folder...

Any ideas on how to fix this issue?

Thanks!!!

Look in apps/ms office/office/startup/word and see if there are any files in
there--anything in the startup folder will open on launching Word.

If that's the problem, look in Preferences--File Locations, and I wonder if
the AutoRecover location might be set to the Startup folder?

This is going to be a hard one...

If Daiya's idea doesn't work, have the user run Disk Utility and Repair
Permissions, then shut down his machine all the way to power off. Count to
ten (at least) then re-boot.

The first step ensures the folder permissions are correct on the hidden
system Temp folder, the second causes OS X to flush its temporary files.

Probably won't work either, but it's the next step in the process...

Cheers
