Multiple files: crash after startup

When opening Excel, (unbidden) it tries to load dozens of files of various types, displays error messages for those not supported by Excel, and then runs out of memory and crashes. The latest log is below.

OK. It's fixed. I saw similar posts, started Excel while holding the shift key down (that was new to me), and corrected my preferences.
