multiple issues with outlook 2007

We have 5 machines that I built as follows: amd x2 4800+ biostar 7025 board
windows xp pro office 2007 small business uninstalled business contact
manager hoping to fix some issues since it is not used but didnt seem to help
the only addin installed is share calendar from 4 team and of course they
hold office 2007 as problem not them.......these problems have been there for
since computer were built and first used and with every update I keep hoping
they will fix them still have not.... these are the issues....1. at times
when creating new email outlook hangs up outlook.exe cpu usesage is through
the roof the mouse will disappear over the outlook window but works
everywhere else have to use task manager to shut down outlook .....2. emails
hang in outbox will keep trying to send over and over...use the suggestions
to clean outbox but next few emails that are sent starts hanging all over
again....3.at times just hangs all together....i have all updates installed
up to the 7/8/08 one that was suppose to help but has now seemed to make
emails hang in outbox worse......I have also uninstalled and reinstalled on 2
of 5 computers......repaired pst. and ost. files which did not help....I have
suggested that everyone keep the inbox and other folders as small as possible
as others have stated it help with there situations.....anyone have any
ideas??????????If I downgrade to office 2003 will things saved in 2007 be
compatible if i have to resort to that extreme.....these are used in a law
office and the primary tool is outlook has to work and work right....please
help anyone...thanks in advance

These symptoms can often be attributed to an AntiVirus application setup to
scan email that develops a problem (which they ALL do sooner or later). Is
such an application in this picture anywhere?

I do have trend micro internet security 2008 installed and have disabled spam
feature and antivirus scan feature for email to rule this out as an issue....
I plan to downgrade to 2003 tommorrow due to problem worse and almost
unusable since july 08 2008 update to repair crash issues with
outlook......will there be any issues in doing so???????will word 07 doc.
open in word 03??? etc......
