Multiple levels of numbering styles in one paragraph in Word

I am trying to use two levels of numbering styles in one paragraph to
get the following:

1(A) text goes here

Level one is 1 - Level 2 is (A)

If I put a style separator after the number 1, the text formatting for
level two applies to "text goes here," but the (A) does not appear.

Any answers or work arounds?

Thanks,

Instead of a style separator, try using a LISTNUM field. You can insert it
via the Field dialog box. Select "ListNum" (under "Field names"). Make sure
"List name" is set to "(none)." Specify the desired "Level in the list"
(leave "Start-at value" unselected).

Actually I had a problem with this. The numbering comes out OK but it
keeps the formatting from the first level. If the first level is bold
and second is not, when I insert the field code the numbering comes in
but not the formatting (seems to be the opposite problem of using
style separator). Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks for your help.

The LISTNUM field result assumes the formatting at the insertion point. You
will have to manually apply formatting to the field (for example by applying
a character style).
