Multiple mail icons in system tray-Outlook 2000

Jennifer M.

When I receive new messages the "yellow envelope" icon appears in the system
tray. But, it doesn't go away, and when more messages come in more envelope
icons appear. When I go to Task Manager "Outlook.exe" will appear numerous
times.

(the number of mail icons in the system tray = the number of times
"Outlook.exe" appears in the Processes tab of Task Manager) The only way for
me to be rid of the multiple mail icons in the system tray is to end process
for every instance of "Outlook.exe".

This problem started occuring when I installed the 60-day trial version of
Office 2003 that was on this new computer. After trying Outlook 2003 an error
started occuring (I can't recall the error as it was several weeks ago), and
I started using Outlook 2000 again.

I have since uninstalled the Office 2003 trial edition, as well as my Office
2000.
I reinstalled Office 2000, but the problem continues.

I'm frustrated with having to "end task" on every instance of Outlook-and
frustrated with all the mail icons that are appearing on the system tray
everytime new mail arrives.

Any thoughts? Thanks for the help-apologies for this lengthy message.

Some common reasons why Outlook will not shut down completely when you click
either the X or Exit:

1. PDA synchronization software with your PDA in the cradle.
2. WinFax Pro (especially 10.02 in Outlook 2003) - contact their support
for an alleged fix.
3. Franklin-Cover Plan Plus!
4. COM Add-ins.
5. Mail reminder add-ins that keep a stub of Outlook open in the background
to check for new mail and fire reminders.
6. Anti-virus/firewall programs that are set to scan incoming and outgoing
mail.
