Multiple Office Apps in Task Manager, even after I've closed them.

Just recently my laptop (Win XP MC, Office 2003 SP3,) started to retain
multiple memory-sucking instances of Office apps even after I'd closed them.

For example, in the course of a 10-30min work session:
I might run something in Access, copy and past something from Access into
Excel, open Outlook and pull data from an Excel attachment, etc, etc, close
everything except Access, whatever (the exact details are not the point).

On noting that Access is then kind of slow, I check Task Manager and see
that 2-5 instances of Excel may be running, along with 2+ Access.exe's, and
one or two Outlook.exe's, and so forth, all uselessly sucking away 100-200KB
of memory or more in total.

Duped Access is particularly annoying, as I then get the notorius (I
paraphrase) "can not run (whatever) because another user has control over
this..." error.

The question is, why is this happening, and what can I do to make it stop?
The Access file is the only one I use that has VBA code, but none of its code
calls other apps. I'm not inclined to start adding code to my apps to make
them not do something they're not supposed to do...

Will rebuilding my HDD **really** fix the problem? Is it time for Linux?

Many thanks for any tips.

Youve run Office Detect/Repair?
Do you have any anti virus application that has an Office add-in?
