multiple opening files on start up

Version: 2004
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

when i start Excel many files open all at once, some of then are word files and some are pdf files sone are also xl files. I get a message saying work.doc file formate is not valid but no error wen it opens a pdf file. I only want to open a blank file.

Go to Excel> Preferences> General & clear whatever you've entered in the
Alternate Startup File Location field.
