Multiple outline numbering within the same document.

Hi there,

I have a quick question about outline numbering in word. I have found a few
websites showing you how to set up numbering schemes by applying a style for
each level of the number and saving as a number and giving the numbering a
ListNum field list name.

All is fine, but if I create a second set of numbering styles (using a
separate set of styles for each level) I don't seem to be able to apply the
second set of numbering in the same document.

If I do, either the numbering above the selection will apply the new
numbering scheme, or the numbering will be removed from the previous list
alltogether. (In each instance, the styles for each paragraph on the
numbering scheme are still applied to the text above)

I am sure I have seen two sets of styles in the one document before and was
wondering if anyone had cracked this in a previous life!!

If you would like a copy of our template that I am trying to set styles in,
let me know and I'll post.

Thanks,
Pete

Well, the correct order of work for one set of styles is as described by
Shauna Kelly at:

http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html

To get a second set of numbering, Modify the top level style of the second
set of styles, and repeat the process.

Make sure you are not using the same List Template (numbering scheme pane in
the B&N dialog) in the second case - this shouldn't happen easily if you
start from a different style, but obviously if you do that you'll override
the original numbering scheme and style linking, and it sounds like this may
be what has happened to you. Check all your levels before you leave to make
sure you aren't accidentally redefining any style links you've already made.

One possible gotcha that may have gotcha is that you can't set a built-in
Heading style other than Heading 1 at the top level - Word will link it to
it's 'natural' level. So if you want two separate numbering schemes using
the built-in heading styles, you have to set it up as a single scheme, using
lower levels for your second set of styles - just don't use any numbers from
the first set of styles in the number formats for second.

Hope this helps
