Multiple product keys on the Home and Student edition

My newly arrived copy of Home Student Edition has no fewer than three product codes on the DVD sleeve. Is this a mistake or am I meant to use them for different machines (I think this has a five Mac home install allowed)? Also I ought to point out if any MS people are listening that the product ID they generate was rejected by the registration system - even though it was inaccurate. Given how long it took me to go through the business of getting a Windows Live ID this was a bit of a bore.

I am also not able to register my Home & Student Office 2008 installation. it said that the Product-ID is not correct, but I have verified the Product-Id from the About menu many times (and I even checked the different apps to see if they gave different answers).

Yes, Home and Student comes with 3 product keys/licenses (I thought it
said that in the packaging, but I could be wrong).

Per the license, you may install Office on three machines (be careful to
use different codes for each machine). In addition, you may, if you
install Office on a desktop, also install it on a laptop if it's for
your use, but you may not run both at the same time.

Don't worry about registration - all it does is get you on the Microsoft
email list.

MacOffice doesn't require registration to run.

I installed the Home & Student edition on one of my Macs and tried to register and registration with the product ID that it generated also failed.

Are you sure you are interpreting the characters correctly, Ohs and Zeros,
and eights and Bees are easy to mix up. If your product ID has these
characters, try a few permutations.

The Product-ID appears to be a number (no letters). Mine has no zeros, and I have checked the "1"s as well to ensure that they are not lower-case L.

The example from the registration web page is: 51872-442-2230403-56078.

I cannot copy-and-paste from the About box, but I really don't think I am mistaking the Product-Id digits.

I have Home and Student edition and I too receive Invalid Product ID when trying to register on Mactopia

I felt sure I was doing it correctly. Unfortunately the software won't let you copy across the characters.

There is nothing to copy. What you should be entering is the characters from
the yellow sticker on the box.

Ouf, I am glad to read that I am not the only one with this registration problem... Unfortunately for us, the only way to have email support is by entering a valid PID :(

@Bob Greenblatt: we are not talking about the licence key, but the PID generated during the installation and that you can see in the "About" box.

Our box has 3 licenses: 1 installed on son's macbook, 1 on my iMac, and now, 12 months later, the last 1 on daughter's macbook. But we reentered the first key by accident. I can't see how to edit/change/fix the key. We tried installing again, but never were prompted to enter the key.

We've gotten 1 message so far that the license is already in use. And, if we try to check for updates, it gives us an error message. How can we fix this?

Couldn't remove first install (admin error?), but then used AppZapper and did a clean install. Looks good!

I too am having the same problem. My product ID does not contain any letters, they are numbers only. We all can't be wrong.

Registering is not required on a Mac. It might get you some free support but
that's about all.

Forget registering. It¹s not required. Half the stuff on Mactopia doesn't
work correctly right now. It's a huge mess!

Again, it¹s not required that you register, it only puts you the Microsoft
mailing list.

It's not the code on the box it's asking for it's the PID - it specifically tells you to look in the about box of the app for the number (which can't be copied.)

Start the Office Remover application, and hold down the Option key while it
starts.

It will offer you the opportunity to remove the licence key only. Do that.

You will be prompted for the correct licence key the next time you start an
application.

Cheers

I'm having this problem, too. There's a little xml file in office that contains the PID, and after trying typing it myself, I copied and pasted that into the form and it was still rejected. This is definitely broken.

Yup, that's the consensus. And it's meaningless - registration is not in
any way necessary.
