Multiple profiles using same .pst file - and duplicate messages question

Having read multiple posts and Msoft KB articles on duplicate email
issues w/ Outlook 2003, looking to see if someone can verify the
problem I'm having as a possible limitation w/ Outlook. (running XP Pro
- SP2, POP Outlook 2k3 client with all Office (Outlook) SP's installed
to address an earlier issue with duplicate messages after an incomplete
send/receive operation)

I'm using one profile on my system for remote wireless communications
(using phone company wireless air-card) and using a 2nd profile used
for when in the office on the company network. Both profiles
referencing the same "outlook.pst" data file.

Do a send/receive when in office, and pull down 10new messages. Close
Outlook and unplug from the company network. Put in the wireless air
card, connect to the wireless network - open Outlook and the 10 new
messages I pulled in when on the company wired network are there in my
Inbox before ever doing a send/receive. Just what I want to see.

I now do a send/receive on the wireless profile, and the 10 new
messages that I already had in my inbox upon opening Outlook, get
pulled in again, giving me duplicate messages.

The "incoming" mail server that I'm using for receiving email, is the
same server configured under each profile. And the email acct under
each profile is config'd to leave a copy of messages on the server.

If someone could verify this and if there is a fix I've missed, but it
appears Outlook is not able to flag which messages have already been
downloaded, when switching between different profiles, even though the
same information store is being used for each profile and the messages
are already present in the Inbox. - TIA -

If these are the same accounts why have separate profiles? What settings are
different that you think you'll need to create an additional profile?
Outlook has no mechanism to tell to all the other profiles what has been
downloaded already.

Roady - went with 2 separate profiles as even tho the incoming POP
server is the same under each profile, the SMTP server is different
between profiles. When connected wirelessly, I had to config the
wireless carriers (Verizon) SMTP server in order to send email. Would
not "send" email when I was on the Verizon network and had the
company's internal SMTP server parameters configured.

It seemed like a "cleaner" config approach. Select the "Verizon
Wireless" profile when remote, and the "Outlook" profile when on the
company network. May not be the best solution, but that's how I'm
config'd at the moment.

If Outlook has no mechanism to tell the other profiles what's been
downloaded already, then that effectively tells me that under this
dual-profile environment, the "duplicate" issue I'm currenty seeing,
can not be corrected.....ok-

Given this, what I may have to do is add another email acct under the
"outlook" profile (profile used for when on company LAN), that has the
Verizon smtp server information config'd. Does this sound like the
logical next step?

Thanks, and appreciate your followup -

That is indeed the proper way to go; add a additional account. Make sure you
only configure one account to receive otherwise you'll end up with
duplicates again. You can set this in Tools-> Options-> tab Mail Setup->
button Send/Receive-> button Edit...

Another thing you could try is to configure the SMTP account to use
authentication. Depending on how security is configured on the LAN and WAN
you might be able to use the same SMTP on either network.

Very good - that clears things up and greatly appreciate your
assistance on this. Have a good rest of the Sunday afternoon -
