multiple PST files - one per account?

dear community,

I've got several email accounts, most of which are totally unrelated to
each other and as such I'd like to keep them separated on a file level
as well.

there's (e-mail address removed), (e-mail address removed), (e-mail address removed), (e-mail address removed). I also
use a calendar and contacts.

I'd like to have a setup like this:

(e-mail address removed)
(e-mail address removed)
(e-mail address removed)
(e-mail address removed)
calendar_contacts.pst

so basically one pst per mail account and one pst for all other non
mail related stuff...

how can I do that?

You can do this either by using rules; Tools-> Rules and Alerts or by using
separate mail profiles per account. You can define profiles in Control
Panel-> Mail-> button Show Profiles...

profiles sound good to me, but im wondering: would I have to restart
outlook all the time to be able to use a different one?

if I use rules, will outlook put the files in the correct .pst as well?
I always thought that rules where used to move files between folders
(like mail from (e-mail address removed) into the company folder etc, not for
PST moving)

care to clarify?

how can I do that?

Create a different mail profile containing one account. Use the Mail
applet in Control Panel. Do NOT select a default profile. That way,
you are asked on Outlook startup as to which mail profile you want to
use during that Outlook session. To change mail profiles, you have to
exit Outlook and reload it to again get the prompt as to which mail
profile to use. Each mail profile can have a different set of files
under Data Management.

Yes, you would have to switch profiles then.
Yes, rules can be used to move items to different pst-files as well.

thanks guys - you all helped me a lot.

I think I found another solution though:

I was using POP3 and IMAP mail accounts, which is no problem, however,
all POP3 items where available from within the standard Inbox Folder.
This kinda bugged me and thats what I wanted to solve.

All the IMAP accounts however, only displayed iNBOX content in their
respective inbox folder + they all use their own .pst, while POP3
accounts use one general .pst - problem solved

So all I had to do was change all email accounts from POP3 to IMAP and
recreate the accounts in the listing - no problem.

Now, that only leaves me with 2 more questions:

1.) Where does outlook store the information which .pst files are
loaded? I tried looking at the registry but couldnt find it there...

2.) How can I move my complete OL config from my desktop to my laptop
without having to recreate it all?
