Multiple users editing a shared file at the same time

R

Rick Vogt

A shared file on the network allows multiple users to get
enter the file and make edits at the same time which then
causes the file to crash and all of the edits are lost.
Why does the file not notify the person that is in use by
someone else?

If you have the file shared, Excel will allow users to edit it
simultaneously. It works sometimes, but has little protection for cell
level locking etc, so crashes are frequent.

If the file is set to exclusive mode, any subsequent users will get a
dialogue asking if they want to open read only or be notified when the file
is closed by the other user. That's about your options
