multiple versions of same personal folder file

hello all, I work in the IT dept. of a company and we setup personal folders
in outlook 2003 for each user. we store these personal folder files on
servers and lately i have noticed that there are multiple copies of each
users personal folders file. it is the same personal folder file but at the
end of the personal folder file name it puts the user's user id with v1, v2,
v3 etc. in brackets at the end.
example:
personal folder.pst
personal folder(jdoe v1).pst
personal folder(jdoe v2).pst
personal folder(jdoe v3).pst
The first file, personal folder.pst, is the good file that is being used in
outlook but the others are being automatically created some how. If anyone
knows how these are being created please let me know. If it is legitimate, i
would like to know how to stop/turn this off.

The profile is likely corrupt
The use of a pst over a network is not supported by MS as it can lead to
corruption (of the pst)

it would be nice if it was as easy as that but this problem is not happening
with only one oner but will most of our laptop user's that are setup with
offline files. I 'm thinking offline files has something to do with it.
