Multiple Versions

I have 3 versions of Access on my developer machine (97,
2000 and XP). All were working fine until today.

While working in an XP project, Access bombed. It
indicated I should look for updates, which I did. The
Office Updates web site walked me through a few security
updates for XP, and then it attempted SP-3 for Office
2000. When the SP-3 update finishes, it searches for
further updates, and keeps coming up with SP-3, as if it
doesn't recognize that it was already installed.

So, I say forget it, let's get back to work. I attempt to
launch my XP project, and I get "This database is in an
unrecognized format." Apparently, Office 2K has become my
default when double clicking a database file that might be
either 2K or XP.

Did the upgrade change something in the registry? Is
there somewhere I can go and change it back? I want my XP
database files to be recognized as such, so they'll launch
directly (and my shortcuts will work).

As I recall, different versions of Access should be installed in order
(along with SPs.)
So applying SP3 to an older version after XP was installed may have been a
mistake.

I would try re-installing A2002.

Also, the last version of Access that was started determines what happens
when you double click an mdb file. SO if you open A2000 and then close it,
double clicking an mdb file will use A2000.

By building your shortcuts to include the proper
executable as well as the database, you can insure that
the proper version is used each time regardless of which
one is the current default for the extension.
