Must be open to Paste

Word 2003 & XP Home. Used to be able to Copy first & then Paste into a Word
file but recently find I must open Word first before copying or the Paste
function won't work. Why has this changed? Have a second pc with identical
software and it performs the way I prefer. Any ideas? TIA Stan
