My chart disappears when I click in the page, help

I am using the chart feature. I click INSERT, OBJECT, select a graph chart.
After it appears I can input data If I click on the page anywhere except for
the chart the chart disappears. The graph usually stays. I have tried saving
the page, clicking undo, I cannot figure out what I am doing wrong. Help!
