My computer converts Word Documents to WordPerfect

I am having a problem opening Word documents online. My computer for some
reason identifies the .doc file as a WordPerfect 12 document and converts the
Word document into WordPerfect before it will open it. However, if I "save"
rather than "open" the document, and then open the document off line, the
computer will properly identify it as a Word document and open it with Word.
Any clues how to change this? I have already told the computer through the
Windows Explorer to open all .doc files with Word, to no avail.

I visit a website where my son's high school posts a daily bulletin. When I
click on the bulletin, a window opens asking me whether I want to open the
document then (i.e., to read it while I'm still online), or whether I want to
save it to my computer. The document has a .doc extension, but is identified
in this window as a WordPerfect 12 document. If I say I want to open it now,
the computer opens WordPerfect 12, converts the document and then opens the
document for me to read. If I say I want to save the document, sign off, and
then go to "My Documents" and click on the document, it opens with Word.

That might not be something you can change. Since you know that if you save
it to your computer first, then open it, that it works properly, I'd suggest
doing just that.

Have you talked to anyone else who uses that site?

No, I haven't talked to anyone else who uses this site, and I know it is a
minor irritant, but I got it in my head to try to "fix" this little bug and
was frustrated when I couldn't figure out how to do it. I will let go of my
obsession with it now. Thank you for your interest.

I wish there was more I could do but like I said, you might not be able to

If you have both Word Perfect and Word on your PC, there will inevitably be
some conflict between file associations. In any case it is always better
practice to save the file to your hard drive and open the file from there.
The probability is that your computer does not convert anything - both Word
and WordPerfect are able to open each other's files, it is merely making a
wrong choice based on the amount of information it has from the file and the
registry associations. There is probably little that you can do to change
the behaviour as each application will grab its own associations when used.
