My computer goes ballistic

Donna

I've a PC problem on my Windows XP PC and do not know how to rectify it.I've
written in before and received numerous responses on what to do(and, have
done them)all, to no avail.

My question is what causes a PC monitor screen to go ballistic where closed
desktop and closed programs folders to automatically open up in the middle
of a singular program I am working on? This has been an ongoing problem-and
does seem to happen whenever my Outlook Express is opened or my Internet
Explorer browser, which makes the latter appear that they are on a timer!

I've no virus nor any type of Spyware or Ad Popping software attached to my
computer. If I had any, I'd to remove all since my last Norton Antivirus
2004 upgrade which is programmed to remove them.

My program is that whenever my computer goes ballistic, as I'd explained
above-and, even changes the toolbar location, which I prefer at the bottom
of my desktop to either above or on the side-and, I 'm unable to easily
relocate it to it's original location-that 1-3 green l CPU light pops up on
my toolbar, while this flashing is frantically taking place, making all
impossible to halt and the only way I can do so is to manually do a
Control-Alt-Delete function to make my taskmanager.exe window pop up and,
either try to highlight and click on the taskmanager.exe to end the process
or to just log off and re-boot on again. I usually have to make several
attempts with the Control Alt Delete function-just to perform the latter
functions.

This problem has been become more frequently as ever, as well as, and, is a
major headache, for sure.

Has anyone had this problem and know of a solution to fix this very annoying
problem?

In Taskmanager.exe-I even get a program which some time pops up called
'dumprep.exe'-what is this?Could this be my problem?

I don't know where else to look to rectify this problem and, have begun
wondering if it is Norton related, Windows Update upgrades(which I do a lot
of), my USB network adaptor which I must use for my DSL server, or even my
DSL provider at Verizon.net?

Any advice or solutions you have shall be greatly appreciated.

Thank-you!

Hi,

From the sounds of things, this seems to be some sort of
virus or possibly legitimate software going haywire. What
you need to do as it seems to be a broad spectrum issue
is narrow down the options. So first, find out if it
happens in safe mode following article:

315222.KB.EN-US A Description of the Safe Mode Boot
Options in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;315222

If it seems to work fine in "Safe Mode with Networking"
then you can head towards software on the machine and
move on to "Clean booting" the machine. If it still
behaves badly, make sure that the norton signature file
is updated and maybe scan using an online AV vendor
(sometimes Nortons doesn't pick-up all worms or trojans).
If the issue is still happening then check all your
drivers to make sure they are either XP compliant or at
least designed for XP (incompatible drivers can lead to
funky performance although this shouldn't be case in this
instance). If you are still having issues, I would
suggest cut your losses and rebuild you machine and
reinstall all you software again (while disconnected from
the internet) and install Nortons last (nortons can
corrupt installs because of the way it works). Also,
disable the Nortons Office AV-Plugin as this affects how
office operates. Should be under "Options"
then "Miscellaneous" in Nortons application.

If when you booted into safe mode and the PC appeared
fine then move on to clean booting the system. If the
issue is still not there then I reckon it would be
software loaded onto your system. Move to the next
article troubleshooting with MSConfig. If the issue is
occurring, I would say that it maybe device drivers or
the Windows installation is corrupt (check you drivers
then rebuild your system.)

310353.KB.EN-US How to Perform a Clean Boot in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;310353

If you have gotten to here and the PC is fine, you will
need to narrow down what apps are running at the time the
issues occur or in a more practical sense, disable all
services and startup items (detailed in the following
article) and test, if machine works fine then introduce a
couple at a time and test. The longer you take through
here the more accurate your results. When you introduce a
couple and the issue appears, then we know which is the
issue. one of the ones we just introduced - making it
easier to resolve.

310560.KB.EN-US How to Troubleshoot By Using the Msconfig
Utility in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;310560

Good luck.

P.S. how do you know you do not have any spyware (you
should manually clear your cache and cookies:

243787.KB.EN-US WINUP: Error Message: Cannot Display Page
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;243787

follow option 1, then find out how to delete all activeX
controls and other internet objects. Basically like step
2 but for non-ms sites.
