I cannot use the copy and paste function in Word. This has never happened
before. I have tried to trouble-shoot it but I can't figure out what the
problem is. Very frustrating!

First see if you can copy and paste normally in Safe mode. To start Word in
Safe mode, hold Ctrl as you run the application.

This happened to me after I downloiaded the utility that allows me to open
WORD 2007 files with WORD 2003. The clipboard in 2007 is apparently
different. I can paste things into WORD 2003 if they have been saved to the
clipboard in EXCEL. What is the solution? Reinstall 2003 and loose the 2007
Read capability?

I presume your 'utility' was the Compatibility Pack for Office 2000-2003
that lets you open 2007 formats. Why? If you have both W2003 and W2007
installed, the utility is totally unnecessary.

Also, if you cannot copy/paste in Word 2007, it is far more likely to be the
corrupt registry key. It has nothing to do with the Compatibility Pack or
co-existing versions of Word but probably due to letting updates run whilst
Word was open.

Run Regedit, navigate to the Word Data Key and whilst DATA is selected,
press Delete.

Word Data Key

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Data

Many thanks. I was having the same problem (couldn't cut and paste) along
with some other issues and deleting the Data Key fixed everything.

I'm pleased it fixed your XCV problem.

I am having the exact same problem, however when I go to the registry editor,
I don't see "Data Key." I just see (Default), REG_SZ, No Value Set. And
there's another that says PrintersforSingleTile, REG_MULTI_SZ, Adobe PDF. I
haven't been able to use Word for almost a year. I've tried to re-install it,
but that doesn't work. Word 2003 works, but it came with my other computer
and gives me weird errors when I try to use it.

Terry, I found this helpful, but it it might be even more helpful for Word
2003 users (like me) if you tell them to use the \11.0\ folder instead of the
\12.0\ one. I had to go and look at my About MS Word tab in the program
itself to figure this one out.

Thanks again for the solution.

The original question was about Word 2007 (Word 12), and AFAIK, this problem
has been experienced only in Word 2007.

I haven't installed Word 2007 on my computer (though I do have the add-on
that allows me to read 2007 documents in Word 2003). It was my Word 2003
that had the problem, and when I applied the solution to the Word 11.0 folder
instead of the 12.0 folder, the problem was resolved. It seems the problem
and solution both apply to both the older and newer version of Word.

That may be true, but it doesn't change the fact that there was no reason
for the original reply (which was to a question about Word 2007) to include
information about the Registry path for Word 2003, especially given that we
were unaware that this problem might affect any version other than Word
2007.

I am having what appears to be the same problem, only in Word 2002 SP3.

I can copy and paste in other applications but anything that I either cut or
copy in Word cannot be pasted. If there was something in the clipboard prior
to the copy or paste, this is what is pasted rather than what I have just
copied or pasted.

I cannot identify what I should be deleting. I have noted Terry Farrell's
post which states that a data key should be deleted from:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Data

However I have no "Data" folder at that address.

I do have a folder
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Word\Data

which contains four items:
- One entitled "(default) " of type "REG_SZ"
- Three of type "REG_BINARY" entitled "Settings", "Toolbars" and
"ToolbarsWordMail"

I too am having the same problem. I did as Terry said too with 12 but I also
have 10 and not sure if I should delete this one too. HELP! Deleteing 12
didin't fix it.

Change the path to agree with the version of Word that you are using. 12.0
is only applicable to Word 2007.

Word 2007 = 12.0
Word 2003 = 11.0
Word 2002 (XP) = 10.0

The emergence of the problem with versions prior to Word 2007 have only
recently started to occur.

OK - I have now solved the problem by downloading and running the "guided
help" from the support page referred to in my previous post.
