My data base contains periods and # symbols. What to do

I want to create labels through a mail merge but discover through MS Word
that I cannot use it because of periods and other symbols.

You may want to also post this in the Word mailmerge group
(link below) and include some additional information.
The version of Word you're using.
The format/type of your database
The merge process you're using and result you'd like to achieve.
