My default 8 1/2 x 11 "US Letter" word document is 8 1/2 by 19 1/2

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)

I tried to change the "normal" template, but couldn't. I tried to reset to default - but that doesn't change anything. I tried to create a new "custom size" but that only made another 8 1/2 by 19 1/2 document even though I input 8 1/2 x 11.

The problem is - I can't even change the document size so it looks right! I can only change the margins so it prints correctly, but if I email it to anybody the wrong size goes with it.

I deleted the "normal" template and shut down my computer. When I restarted my computer, Word took a while to open, but it created it's own default "normal" template, which works great!

Good! You found both the problem and the cure

A Normal template inherited from a previous version can produce some very
peculiar problems.

As you say, the default template created automatically by Word works great
