My default normal.dot has changed somehow and is useless

My default normal template has somehow changed and contains styles, etc. that
don't seem to exist. Deleting or renaming normal.dot doesn't help, because it
defaults now to the bad one. How can I fix it?

A style that is listed can hardly be a style that doesn't exist. Can you
clarify this statement?

It's not listed...it was just there. When I clicked on the bullet list icon,
I'd get an indent halfway across the page with a checkbox bullet. I had never
formatted a paragraph that way, but it became the default in normal.dot. When
I tried to change it, it didn't come up with a name.
It's irrelevant now...I just ran a repair/detect and set everything back to
defaults and it seems to have helped. Just another Microsoft moment, I
guess...

Bullets and Numbering styles are stored in the Registry rather than
Normal.dot. So when you reset Word to the defaults the Registry
settings were reset as well.

Should this occur again in the future, all you need to do is go to
Format/Bullets and Numbering, select the gallery that you do not want
to use and click the Reset button.
