If you are referring to the list of recent files (found under the Office
button in Word 2007, or on the File menu in Word 97-2003), you can clear it
by setting the number of recent files to zero in the Word Options dialog
box. Click OK to close the dialog, and then open it again to set the desired
number of recent files.

If you are saying that the new blank document created as you start Word
contains text, you can open the Normal template as a file and remove the
contents. Save and close the file. See
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/apperrors/blankdocnotblank.htm.

If you are saying something else, please clarify.

In addition to Stefan's comments, in 2003 and prior you can use
Ctrl+Alt+Hyphen to enable individual selection and deletion of these Recent
files, press Escape to deactivate. Does this work in 2007?
Hope this helps

No, it doesn't work in Word 2007 (but in the Customize Keyboard dialog box
Ctrl+Alt+Hyphen is still listed as assigned to the
ToolsCustomizeRemoveMenuShortcut command).
