my document has locked itself and will not allow me to continue?

while typing my thesis my document locked on me, and my screen reads, as
follows, "modification can not be made document is locked"
please tell me what can I do to "unlock" the document which is in Word, and
continue changing and formatting the document
please help, this is very urgent, and the thesis is due TODAY
any assistance would be of great help

Either you have not activated Word, or it is a trial version that has
expired. I think you're going to miss your deadline.
