my document is in unicode and cannot get it back into english, hel

My mum had started writing a book on her laptop using works. i made sure i
made a copy of this on a usb pendrive when her laptop went in to be fixed.
now when i open the documents in either works or word 2007 it comes up
looking like this:

how can i get this back into the correct format. is there a website that
will translate it back into english because i have tried everything in word
an works.

Did you copy or save the file to the data stick?
Are you trying to open the file from the datat stick or did you copy it back
to the hard drive first?
When the laptop was repaired, was the software upgraded?
Having copied to the hard drive, can you open the file in Wordpad?

had to reinstall the software back on myself and got the latest updates, it
opens in the code as before in wordpad,
