My documents dropdown does not open then word does not respond

When I try to open a word document by using the dropdown, look in menu, it
locks up and "open (not responding)" is shown. Word closes down and an
error message to Microsoft is displayed. If I use the "up one level" icon I
can search for the document I want. I also find that when I have a document
open and want to save as, I have the same problem and Word closes down again.

Office 2000 Pro.
