My drawings have disappeared

In a Word 2003 file I've created some drawings using the drawing toolbar.

Now, the drawings do not appear. When I toggle ALT-F9 to show field values I
see { SHAPE \* MERGEFORMAT }. But then when I toggle it back, the pictures
disappear.

Word still knows the size of the drawing object, because I can select it and
a big black rectangle appears. But I can't double-click the box to edit the
shape.

Any suggestions?

Tools | Options | View: Clear "Picture placeholders" and check "Drawings."
