My email go into the sent items but they never get delivered

I have outlook 2003 and often the emails give all indications of being
sent i.e. going through the outbox to Sent items but never get
delivered. once that happens even tiny emails sent to myself won't get
delivered. Interestingly the Outlook test message works and does get
delivered. Any ideas?

Using a virus scanner that integrates with Outlook? Disable this integration
and try again.
