my email processing seems to be hung up

The Outlook Send/Receive Progress window shows the "tasks" have completed
successfully. However, in the drop down, they are all "processing" and they
are not showing up in my "sent" box in Outlook.
I am repeatedly getting a message that Outlook is "synchronizing boxes" -
what does that mean?
