my emails don't download in OL XP

I use Gmail as a POP address and download my emails to Outlook. I have a
laptop and it works perfectly well. I just got a new computer (with XP too),
and my emails don't reach OL in it. They are connected in Network. I sent an
email to Gmail, they say I can try to update Office. And I cannot. I went to
the updates and I get "updated were unsuccessfully installed". Actually< I
have one other POP address and it works!

Can you help me? Do you have any idea why my emails go to OL in the laptop
and not in the desktop?
