My Excel file dissapeared from my desktop

I am Using Mac OSX10

I had an Excel file placed permanently on my toolbar cause I often use it

One day, I clicked on the icon on the toolbar and a question mark appeared
within the Icon. The file would not open no matter how many times I clicked
on the icon.

I tried to drag the file onto my desktop...once I releasd the mouse button ,
the file simply went swoosh !! and vanished from my system entirely.

I have done a search for the file on the entire sustem or "Everywhere" and
there is no trace...

Can anyone explain to me what happened ?

Many thanks...

I am new to Mac , have always used Windows...so I'm a little confused. If I
was using windows I would try to reset the clock date on the computer using
Scanreg/Restore command ....but not sure how to do that on a MAC

thanks again ...

If by toolbar you mean the dock, it sounds like you put an alias to the
file on the dock - files don't actually get transferred. The alias icon
turned into a question mark when it could no longer find the original
file - either it was renamed or it was deleted. When you dragged the
alias off the dock, it was deleted.

If you deleted the original file, there's not much you can do except
restore from a backup.
