my gif disappears when I add it to my word.doc

I am having no luck in adding a picture from file to my word document. When I do so, the image disappears and all I have left are the grips around the image box. I know it's there, but it just won't show. Any ideas?

Go to Tools/Options and click the View tab. Clear the checkmark by
Picture Place holders.
