My headers / footers only show field codes

When I add a header / footer to a document in Word 2003 using the autotext
function this is what I get: FILENAME \p I do not get the brackets in
front and at the end of the field name I only get a box. I have gone though
the help offered and have made sure my field names is unchecked in both the
view and print tabs of my 'Options'. If I type a header / footer myself,
without using autotext, I do not have any problems at all. Using the ALT F9
function does not toggle the field names unless I manually type for example
page 1 of 2. Then if I highlight and toggle, I do get the field code. I
have no problem with header / footers in other programs using the autotext
function. I cannot make it work in Word. If I am emailed a document, or get
one from our network with headers / footers I do not have a problem. Can you
help? Thank you.

I would guess that your AutoText entry is corrupted. Possibly someone less
knowledgeable than you substituted text for the FILENAME field used to
create it. You can recreate it from scratch. It's also possible someone
saved a document as Normal.dot, thereby destroying the AutoText entries.
