My Host and FrontPage IUSR Permissions - Helm Panel

P

PJx

I've tried to set up some Microsoft Access and ASP applications on
some directories on my new host which uses Helm control panel. The
error message I sent them is:
--- msg to host
Here is the error message when my scripts try writing to the database
in my wwwroot/fpdb folder.

"You are here because: You cannot write to the database
You need to add permissions to the IUSR account on your server for
write/modify permissions on the natterchat database."

I asked:
Could you verify that the IUSR account has write/modify permissions
on thatdirectory?
--- End of included message

The IP host response was:
-- begin Response of host
We apologize for the delay in responding to your email.

We have reviewed you account and show that FrontPage has been
installed under the domain name vanzandts.net. When FrontPage is
installed it automatically takes over and manages read or write
permissions.

If you would want write permissions and FTP access on this domain
name, then FrontPage should not be installed. To fix this, simply
remove the domain name from your control panel, after talking any
backups that you may require, and then re-add the domain name. This
will reset the write permissions.

This should resolve your concern.
-- end response of host.

So, it looks like they require I NOT use frontpage on the site IF I
want to be able to properly give fpdb the IUSR modify/write
permissions. I have not tried doing this yet so don't even know if
that would work. The only way to give write permissions is to use the
ftp setup in the helm control panel and I don't know if that includes
IUSR write permissions.
The work around is that there is a DB directory ABOVE or on the same
level as my wwwroot directory so I can't get there with frontpage.
The only access is with ftp, I think.

Is my analysis correct?

If the FP extensions are installed and configured correctly the fpdb folder would have the correct
permission when you publish a from your local computer with an Access database or you import one
into the live site.

Without the FP extensions, you would not have a fpdb folder, unless the host or you have manually
created one.

You web host must configure/correct the permission on the extensions in order for you to use FP
database components directly from within FP.

For added security, you would do best to use the database folder that is provide by your host
outside of the web root, which then requires you to use FTP to upload the database and create
filesystem DSN or dsnless connection using the actual path on the server,
e:\www\yourdomain\database, but your host must tell you what the actual path is.

Open the online web in FP and give the correct permissions for the fpdb
folder using FP.

You can't set those permissions via the FP client application.

I hear you. Thanks.

I've installed 2003 server with IIS several times and always seem to
have to manually add write/modify permissions for IUSR_Machine on the
mdb file. Is this something that FrontPage 2002 and 2003 will do
automatically when setting up a FrontPage Access database on the
server?

If so, that would be a lot easier than doing it manually.

For FP2000, FP2002, FP2003...

As long as the Access database is imported into FP either local or on the live/remote site, and you
let FP move it to the fpdb folder and create the Global.asa file, then the FP extensions should set
the necessary permissions for you on the fpdb folder and the database. However, you may need to run
Tools | Web / Site Settings | database and click Verify.
