My hyperlinks don't autoformat but remain black inside brackets

When I create a hyperlink, it doesnt automatically become blue. Instead it
stays black and sits inside brackets including the text HYPERLINK. To access
it I need to right click and select it as a hyperlink. What can I do to set
this up to be easier to use? Please help, this is very frustrating!

Press Alt+F9 to toggle between field codes (what you're seeing) and field
results.
