my image is coming out squashed

Maybe squashed isn't the best word and it's only very slightly not round.

I've been setting up (Pub 2000) a flyer, business card and index card size
for a person starting a small business. The logo (I created- what they want)
is a round sun, with beams coming out and the name arched over it. I put the
image (sun) on and the words over it, using wordart. It looks fine on the
set up but when it prints the sun is slightly oval. I'm using text boxes for
words on the top and bottom of the card, with "no fill" so they don't cover
the sun. Well, one I used white, with a slight shadow, that does slightly
cover the bottom of the sun (wanted the words to stand out)

The person loves it (and I'm doing it for the practice, plus I get to keep
the left over cards, paper, etc. she bought) and thinks it's fine. It's very
subtle, but to me it's not perfect. I've even tried taking the margins off
on the setup. The index cards (to put on bulletin boards) are printing 4 to
a piece of cardstock, and the business cards are Avery perferated ones. (It
says Laser Business Card on the bottom, and I'm using an injet printer, the
person who bought them said it was all they had and I'd never used them
before).

Another related question, once I have the setup (logo, wording, etc) is
there a way to change the size of what it's on? For example, I set up one on
postcard blank and now want it on an index card size. I would have to resize
the picture, but it's all in separate boxes (picture and text) on the
postcard size one. Once it's saved, it won't resize? If I put a picture box
around the entire card, it covers what's on it. I didn't try it yet, but
I'm thinking of using Paint Shop Pro to do a screen capture, making it into
a jpg, resizing it (as a total picture) and copy/paste it onto the index
card blank. Seems like there might be a better way, using just Publisher
(2000)

This is what I've been doing now to show people what I've set up in
Publisher- if they don't have the program themselves. I've been screen
capturing it with PSP, making a jpg and emailing this to show them. I
haven't figured out a way to save a file in Publisher as a jpg, which
doesn't mean it's not there. (and might be right in front of me)

As to the above quesion with the round sun being slightly oval in the
printing, the jpgs of it come out with the sun as round as in the setup.

Probably not a big deal, but I don't like to miss any opportunity to
learn. (old dog- new tricks?)

Thanks,
Carrie

When you create a circle in Publisher 2000, hold shift as you draw. If you need to
check the dimensions, on the toolbar, format, size & position. You can input the
exact dimensions in this dialogue. Are you using an autoshape for the beams?
Do you have a draw program? You can copy your logo and paste special as a vector
(.wmf) and save it to use in other programs. That way you can re-size the image
without losing quality.
If you copy your images plus the text boxes in Publisher, insert, new drawing, paste
the logo into the drawing canvas you can resize the result, the text will re-size
because now it is an image. Use the wrapping icon to remove the unwanted background
space.

I used an icon from clip art online

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y212/starchild_dreams/sun_shine.gif

I didn't make it.

Maybe putting the words over it (in an arch- right over the point of the
beams) pushes it down when it prints. Even though I use "no fill" on the
words. It looks fine (round) in the set up. And the person I'm doing it for
thinks it looks good. It's just something I notice, because it starts out
perfectly round.

Thanks,
Carrie

Your sun is not round. Try this one, I have put a .gif on a web page, right-click the
link and a .wmf will be saved to your folder.

Hi, Carrie -

One of my favorite Publisher 2000 tricks is to "Select all" > "copy"
"paste special" > "as picture"

.... to use in Publisher. I can resize the whole thing. Turn an 8.5x11 flyer
into a quick postcard, etc. Results vary - usually working best if I keep the
same aspect ratio (otherwise, fonts can produce some, errm, odd results.)
But, depending upon what you need, this can be a very useful quick-fix --to
use within Publisher. Experiment with it if you hadn't already discovered it.

(To get something that is almost universally viewable - I have used a free
PDF program that is often mentioned on these boards.)

....and that has nothing to do with the "squashed" part of your question! It
seemed to fit in with the rest of it, I hope.

Yes, it did, thanks!

I think that will work.

Thanks, that' great!

I think today I'm going to redo it again, and make the sun (using yours) a
little more yellow and lighter. Mine is printing out a gold-orange and when
*I* see it I think of a fried egg (LOL)

I also was playing with Word Art last night (till the wee hours..) and
making logos, and discovered there's a sun in the auto shapes.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y212/starchild_dreams/shinylogo_pic.jpg

This is the first logo I tried (I think it probably has too much, the
rainbow and shadow, etc but I was experimenting). I just keep thinking "I
love this stuff!" There's so much I want to learn and do.

I once read a joke, something like "you know you spend too much time on
a computer when..." things like "there's skid marks on your mouse pad". One
was you find yourself going to bed at night with a book about WORD.

I laughed at myself last night, when I thought of this, and realized
this is my night time reading- "Using Microsoft Office 2000" (Que) When I
first got it it seemed like too much I couldn't figure out where to start,
but now I'm doing it more in parts and looking things up as I go along. I
was in the Publisher section last night and it referred to Word Art (in
Word) I know Pub. has Word art, but using it in Word there seems to be more
options.

I may never get anything else around the house done again, and I really
don't care (LOL) Took awhile (and a lot of years of being a housewife and
mother, and then saying "if someone can tell me what one DOES with a
computer- at home, I'll get one) but I think I have finally found my
passion. What I love to do. Whether anyone ever pays me for doing it or not.

Isn't that the whole idea "do what you love"? I'm sure most of the people
coming to this group feel the same way, though of course getting into
earning money doing it would be the ultimate.

What a wonderful group "computer people" are. Everyone is always so helpful
and willing to share and teach. I've had to fix my own computers, too (due
to finances) and have had much help with this, when it's been needed. And,
of course, because I've had to do it myself, I've learned a lot in the
process.

PS... when I just looked at this I realized if the sun is in back of the
words the shadows (if any) should be in the front. I also think it's easy to
put too much in something- there's so much available to use.

But, this was just the first playing around with.

I'm going to look up logos online and see how others do them, and know
there are templates in Publisher. Seems to be only a few basic setups, with
variations.

Logos are best created with a Draw application, so they can be created
properly and saved in a format that allows them to be re-used anywhere.

I use CorelDraw when creating logos, but that isn't cheap. Check out the
free version of DrawPlus at www.freeserifsoftware.com. Alternatively, there
is the Draw component of the free OpenOffice.org, but I would recommend
DrawPlus over that (I don't like OpenOffice at all).

I read that when I was reading a book on Word 6. This was when Word 2002
was available - I just like to be aware of software history.

The new-style WordArt, which has been present in Word since Word 97, was
finally added in Publisher in Publisher 2002. I was most peeved when I
upgraded from Publisher 98 to Publisher 2000, only to find that it didn't
have the new WordArt. I have never understood why others are so annoyed
about the upgrade.

A *lot* of the regulars in some newsgroups do use their specialty
professionally. This is a little more difficult to do with Publisher.

Being able to fix your own computer is a great asset, especially when you
become proficient enough to fix others' as well. I find it's a very good
way of making friends.

I don't trust third parties with my computer at all if I can help it; I
prefer to fix my own problems, as I know exactly what I'm doing and I don't
have to give others access to my private data.

That's great! I'm downloading it now.

I probably couldn't put Corel Draw in my 5 year old Win 98 PC anyway.

I have to start somewhere.

And it's such a great feeling when you get it to WORK. I put in a cd
burner (drive) in mine and still amazed it worked. Like the first time,
after weeks- months, asking questions (that I guess were so dumb people
didn't know how to answer them, like "where is page 2 of a website?") I
finally got something uploaded and saw it worked- on the website. It was 2
AM and I had been at it for hours, going in circles trying to figure it out.
I sat there and said to myself "OH MY GOD" it works! Html, javascripts,
it's like magic when it works.

I'm still amazed when I get something to work or figure it out. Few
things I tried several times and gave up each time. Flash and scripts (like
for discussion boards, cgi- perl, even though they're supposedly easy when
you know how. Matt's scripts, etc)

So many people on the tech boards help, too.

I did have one computer (old Packard Bell) someone gave me- I ask for
old computers (LOL) I never did get it to detect a modem in. After that
people kept writing to me as they saw it on boards, saying they had the same
one and same problem. I had upgraded it from 95 to 98 and apparently there's
something it needed from 95. Oh well... I learned a lot from it, but I sure
got burned out on modems.

I live in a rural area and don't have much choice but dialup (or
satelite I think) Waiting for Verison DSL maybe I can get that.

I know! I'm off topic...
