My @ key switched with my " key, nothing to do with AutoCorrect

I'm using Word 2003 in XP Professional. This is not an Autocorrect activity
but is a nuisance while I'm writing a kid's novel. The keys function
naormally after start-up, for about 6 uses, then switch function.

Somehow you are switching languages between English (US) and English (UK).
Normally, it is the Keyboard language set in the Control Panel that is the
defining factor. But I suggest that you check both the COntrol Panel,
Regional Settings and the Word settings to ensure that everything is set to
the correct language.

Thank you, Terry,

I'm grateful for the immediate response and impressed by your advice,
particularly since I forgot to mention that I had tried changing keyboards
and also ran a repair on Office 2003. Your suggestion made really good sense
so I checked the settings and found both Word and the Regional settings were
in English (Australian). Could be the problem, cobber! So I changed both to
English (UK) - where I was born - and it ran correctly for about a dozen
strikes then reverted to the switched keys. So I went to English (US), same
deal. This problem started last week and the only changes made to the system
in that time were the automatic updates from MicroSoft. Surely it couldn't
have been that? Should I do a complete reinstall of Office?

Thanks again,

Rob

A reinstall rarely fixes problems because so much is left in the registry.

Did you look at the site recommended by Stefan? (Get control of language
formatting in Word
http://homepage.hispeed.ch/cindymeister/LangFmt.htm)

Cindy's site will probably find the problem. Personally, because I only ever
use English (UK), I run the Office 2003 Language utility and uninstall all
Languages except English (UK). Then I check that all my templates are set
for UK and that automatically select language is disabled (under Tools,
Language, Set Language). My guess is that you have a rogue template or
document that is activating the wrong language through the automatically
detect language setting.

Thank you, Stefan,

I've saved your suggestion in case (for when) I have another problem. But
this one is now fixed. Terry's advice showed me the right direction and I did
a search and found Susan Barnhill's response to a similar problem. It did
involve getting languages in conflict, as terry suggested, and the answer was
to remove a mysterious shortcut key in the "Switch between input languages"
area.

cheers,

Rob

Terry,

You put me on the right track and Suzanne Barnhill's advice to another Word
user really fixed my problem. Thanks for your help,

Rob

I'm pleased that 'The Collective' succeeded in sorting the problem!
