J

Jackie Brooks

I don't use Mozilla much myself but I was told my webpages were
showing up with silly weird characters instead of quotation marks and
apostrophes and sure enought they are!!

Anyone have any idea about this?

THANKS!!!!

Hi Jackie,

showing up with silly weird characters instead of quotation marks and
apostrophes and sure enought they are!!

Anyone have any idea about this?

The encoding has probably not been properly specified for the pages. The
problem is that Word generates code that's not very clean (to say the
least). You can probaly fix it if you know a bit of html coding, but
it's a tedious job.

It's possible--although Word is really not a good webpage creation tool, as
Corentin said--that turning off smart quotes as you are creating the pages
will solve this particular issue. (Tools | AutoCorrect, AutoFormat As You
Type).

Thanks both for the help--but either I screwed this up or I'm not
doing it right....

I was just guessing--I went to FORMAT--AUTOFORMAT--OPTIONS--FORMAT AS
YOU TYPE and the smart quotes appeared to be turned off. Did I go to
the right spot?

Sorry I'm so silly--hey, I'm good with physics! Bad at computers....

I don't know any HTML coding but I'm looking into having someone else
do one page on a better application and using that format to do the
rest myself, or just getting a better program and using it myself!!

You have in your source
| charset=macintosh

If you change this with any text editor to
| charset=x-mac-roman
many newer browsers will display the special quotation marks
correctly. However, I strongly suggest to use *any other* program
than MS Word for generating HTML documents.

For general advice (no specific programs) see

Amen to that. I occasionally find myself doing it, however.
In those cases, I immediately go in and remove the several
pages of extraneous HTML code before my actual page starts,
then do some search-and-replace to delete the other garbage
that has been inserted around my text. Pages modified that
way have worked okay for me.

Patty, Andreas, & Corentin-

Well, problem solved. After reading all your suggestions and ones
elsewhere I talked my brother into getting Dreamweaver MX 2004 for
Mac!! He got it cheap--grad student didn't use his anymore and wanted
to cut his losses.

By the way, if I reply to you all by replying technically to my own
message, do you all get it? I mean I'm new to Google Groups and I
don't know how other people have things set up but for me to read
replies to my messages I have to actually check back at the site, so I
see everything. If people get things e-mailed to them do they only get
replies to their own replies e-mailed to them?

TTYL and thanks again!

Hope you got my other reply--no idea what's up with this but somtimes
when I search for this thread I get one with 9 messages and sometimes
with only two!

WASSUP WITH THAT?!?

Anyway we got Dreamweaver so we're okay now )

Anyway thanks again and TTYL

Hi Jackie,

I believe I replied to you on another thread about alternative and better
ways to read newsgroups than Google. In case you missed it, see here:
<http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/AccessNewsgroups.htm>

As far as replying to newsgroups in general goes, it is common "netiquette"
to always reply to the group, not to the individual. So you will have to
check the newsgroup for answers to your questions. Google is sometimes
behind in posting and sometimes there are just unexplainable glitches.

***Please always reply to the newsgroup!***

Great! I'm sure he'll find that much better than Word for creating
HTML pages.

I'm not exactly sure what you're asking here. I don't know of any
way to have Usenet postings mailed to you (unless perhaps by some
ISP or web site that offers such a service). The normal way to read
Usenet newsgroup postings is with a news reading program. I'm using
trn on a BSD UNIX system. A popular newsreader for Macs is NewsWatcher.
If you are posting and reading newsgroups through Google's web-based
interface to Usenet, then yes, you'll need to keep checking back at
their site to see new postings.

If you must make webpages from Word, Dreamweaver has a handy feature
for cleaning up word-generated hml:
Under Commands, "Clean up Word html"
It lets you set what version of word and what level of cleaning you want.
Then I often use the find command to replace certain commands and
simplify it. Word html is just ugly. Sometimes you lose some formatting,
but it's not too hard to fix. Best to always use DreamWeaver if at all
possible!

Dayo-

I thought I already responded but I couldn't find it anywhere! Google
groups is almost as confusing to me as tying my shoe. Anyway looks
like the problem is solved because we got Dreamweaver but this is good
to know because I still use Word a lot for other reasons.

Thanks!

getting Dreamweaver.

But you just said Hi Jackie! When you say reply to the group, do you
mean as opposed to e-mailing the person individually? I never do
that--it's just that sometimes two people give me related info that
would seem to warrant one single reply, and I don't know which
person's message to click on to post a reply.

I'll look for your other message back to me--musta missed it! Thanks
though! I'lkl check out that link you gave me.
