My menu is grayed out

I purchased this laptop a few months ago with Microsoft Office 2007 preloaded
on it. I haven't had the opportunity to use the publisher program until just
recently. But when I try to use it, 95% of my menu items are grayed out. I
can't enter text or anything. Anybody have any suggestions why this is
happenning? Thanks
