My messages don't send unless I click send/receive

When I compose a new email and click send it goes to the outbox. I have to
click send/receive to get it to send.

Then that is exactly what you configured Outlook to do. Outlook does what
you tell it to. If you want Outlook to do something else, then post your
Outlook version, mail account type, and current settings so someone can help
you change them to do what you want. Make sure you tell us exactly what you
want Outlook to do.

Was Outlook actually running WHEN you composed the new e-mail? If you
click on a mailto: URL, use a File -> Send as E-mail menu option within
a program, or otherwise programmatically start composing an e-mail, that
does NOT load a fully functional copy of Outlook. It only loads a stub
of Outlook that is sufficient to open the new-mail editor window. When
you are done composing your new e-mail and that window closes, Outlook
also closes. Because Outlook is no longer running, nothing of it is
available to do the send operation. The new message sits in your Outbox
awaiting until you actually fully load Outlook and then open that item
to Send it. Outlook must be running to do the send operation.
