My Microsoft Word is damaged. How can I fix it?

When I open Microsoft Word and attempt to type something it just re-starts
its self and says something about can not recover any work. I found a program
on this site about fixing this problem.. I downloaded it.. it took 3 hours,
but didn't work! Is there anyway I can fix this without having to go out and
buying a whole new Microsoft thing?
